You’ll be glad to know there’s another new electric car on the market – and even happier to be told it’s from a manufacturer you might have actually heard of….
The all new Suzuki e Vitara is a first for the Japanese firm, and the model it’s named after will be familiar to many who have bought it in the past. In fact the Vitara name has been successfully sold around the world for the past 37 years.
It’s been on sale here in the UK since October 1 and comes in two trims – Motion and Ultra – both of which offer four wheel drive, a choice of either 49kWh or 61kWh battery and a heat pump to support the battery range. The latter is usually an extra on many BEVs, and very few at this end of the market offer the reassurance of four wheel drive (named ALLGRIP-e in Suzuki’s world, a technology they have honed over the past 55 years in their small car range).
To prove the point, on the recent UK launch, we drove the cars on an off road route. Not the sort of rough terrain you’d point a Land Rover at but rough enough, with the cars on standard road tyres, to prove the point that the little Suzuki can certainly take the rough with the smooth when required.
Current list prices are reduced by a £3750 grant which means the entry point is the well equipped 2wd 49 kWh Motion grade at £26,249. It has a range of 213 miles, boosted to 264 if you opt for the 61kWh battery.
Suzuki ownership is heavily reliant on brand loyalty, with seven out of 10 customers purchasing another Suzuki, and the aim is for a third of all future sales to be e Vitara. That’s help keep Miliband at bay….
By 2030 Suzuki say they’ll be offering four BEVs on the European market and initially with this one buyers will get a free Ohme home charge point, working on the principle that buyers will have their own driveway to park up and charge on.
The figures given at launch certainly make the case. An annual average mileage of 6,800 miles would cost you around £1,033 – using Intelligent Octopus Go charging that comes down to just £116.
The all new car uses blade battery technology which is covered by the up to 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. DC rapid charge time from 10-80 per cent is currently 45 minutes.
Interior space is good – it is a small SUV after all – and it has sliding rear seats to increase the load capacity if necessary.
Standard kit is impressive. All have front and rear sensors, reversing camera, wireless phone charging, keyless entry and a host of safety features.
The only available option is paint. Metallic white is standard, but there are 11 to choose from, including the Land Green Breeze Pearl Metallic launch colour with its tan upholstery (£650 to you, £950 if you add a black roof).
