VOLVO XC60 RECHARGE: putting the P in Premium

THERE’S a widely-held view (in our household, anyway) that says you’re safer in a modern day Volvo than going for a walk with the Green Cross Code man.

This is a car that has to rank among the most family-friendly and superbly finished of vehicles, and a shoe in for anyone who wants to buy into Volvo’s enviable safety reputation but doesn’t feel the need to go full out with its bigger XC90 stablemate. Continue reading

GENESIS GV60 AWD SPORT PLUS: giggle inducing performance

JUST about anything that takes the stress out of car ownership has to be a serious consideration – and the concierge service offered to Genesis owners is just that.

No longer the need to worry when the next service is due – every customer gets their own on-call personal assistant to take you through the ownership experience. And when it comes to service time, they’ll arrange to pick it up, do the necessary and then pop it back to you. Fully valeted too. Continue reading

HONDA CR-V e:HEV: upmarket move for a winning formula

THE racetracks of the world are a happy place of late for Max and his Honda powered Red Bull colleagues, and so are the car showrooms of the Japanese company for people buying their wares.

Take the latest CR-V – the epitome of all that’s good in a family sized SUV and propelled by their 2.0 litre hybrid petrol engine.

It’s a responsive unit and plenty of torque equals swift forward movement, safe overtaking and fairly relaxed cruising. Continue reading

NISSAN QASHQAI TEKNA+: first of the many still going strong

IT was a bit of a break in tradition when Nissan named their all new SUV over 15 years ago.

Up till then it had been, in the main, numbers or place names that had distinguished cars from their rivals.

But Qashqai? Naming it after a desert-dwelling nomadic tribe from south west Iran was definitely different, but would it attract sales across Europe? Continue reading

TOYOTA bZ4X: Japanese giant builds on years of experience

FOR a manufacturer well versed in hybrid machinery, it’s taken Toyota a while to take the plunge into full electric motoring.

Perhaps they were wondering what to call it – after all, there are a lot of names out there already. And perhaps that’s why they came up with bZ4X, a name almost as curious as the marmite styling of the new SUV. Continue reading

SKODA KAROQ: an SUV that ticks all the right boxes

WHEN Skoda binned its popular Yeti model in favour of the Karoq, caravanners up and down the country donned black armbands and took a moment or two to mark its passing.

What had been a decent towcar for their weekend jaunts was no more, but actually they needn’t have worried – the car that replaced it was more than up to the task. And the proof of that is in the fact it’s just driven off with the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s title of Towcar of the Year, leaving a whole host of worthy competitors in its rear view mirror. Continue reading

HONDA JAZZ EX: boosting the appeal for a younger audience

HONDA are trying hard to move the Jazz away from the elderly ownership profile it has enjoyed for many a year and make it a more attractive proposition to those with less years on the clock.

Whether they succeed will be mirrored in the sales figures, but they seem to be giving it a good chance. Continue reading

AUDI SQ5: understated mix of power and efficiency

IT’S a measure of how understated Audi’s SQ5 is that you can totally miss the fact there’s one parked right alongside in your hotel car park.

Not afraid to admit I did, because it’s not a car that shouts ‘oi, look at me’ as you walk past. It is one that is distinctive though – the big grille and trademark Audi four rings will draw your eye in recognition, and so will the chunky shape you’ve come to appreciate over the years.
